Four Commonly Used Grinding Methods
November 23,2022
Grinding is a unit operation that converts solids into smaller particles. Under the action of grinding, the mechanical force overcomes the chain force inside the solid material. The size and shape of the abraded material are changed. Today, we will introduce you to the four most commonly used grinding methods. They are plane grinding, inner cylindrical grinding, outer circle grinding and centerless grinding.

Surface grinding -- use surface grinder
It is a processing method for grinding the plane of an object. According to the plane grinding mode, grinding wheel axis direction and processing table, and motion form, it can be roughly divided into four types: horizontal axis plane type, horizontal axis rotary table type, vertical axis plane type, and vertical axis rotary table type.
Generally, the horizontal axis flat table is most commonly used, because its square processing table is most suitable for processing the shape of longitudinal and conical objects. The vertical axis type is a processing method that uses the end face of a cup shaped grinding wheel to engage in surface grinding. Because of the large contact area with the workpiece, most of them are used in grinding operations that attach importance to grinding efficiency or mass production;
Internal grinding -- use internal grinder
The processing method of grinding the inner circumference of the hole is called inner circle grinding. The grinding wheel is inserted into the hole for grinding after the workpiece is clamped and rotated by the chuck. However, if the workpiece is large and complex in shape, it is difficult to make it rotate.
It is necessary to adopt the processing method that the workpiece forms planetary motion on the grinding wheel shaft. And then the grinding wheel moves along the circumference of the inner surface of the hole. Because the method must use a small diameter grinding wheel. And because the grinding wheel shaft must rotate at a high speed, it is easy to generate vibration. Therefore, there are certain requirements for the rigidity of the grinding wheel shaft.
Cylindrical grinding - use a cylindrical grinder
Cylindrical grinding refers to the grinding of cylindrical machined objects, including horizontal grinding, oblique grinding and straight grinding.
Centerless grinding -- using a centerless grinder
It is a processing method that the workpiece is not supported by the center hole, but the outer circumference of the workpiece is taken as the standard, and then the workpiece is grinded by supporting the blade and adjusting wheel.
Since the workpiece does not need to be machined with a center hole, it is easy to load and unload the workpiece. In addition to the features of easy automation, it is also the integral support of the workpiece, so it can obtain uniform grinding accuracy. Therefore, it can also be engaged in grinding conical, polygonal, contour and other various rotary workpieces. Generally speaking, there are two kinds of grinding methods: through type and stop type.
